This four-week program takes students step-by-step from “What exactly is a stock?” to understanding the basic mechanics behind options and being able to build and explain a simulated options trade.

That’s why we created the Pre-Options Bootcamp.
Instead of assuming you already know the basics, we start at the beginning and build one layer at a time.
First, understand the stock market. Then understand options. Then learn how to use the platform. Finally, put everything together.
Learn what a company, stock, exchange, and market index actually are. You’ll learn what it means to own shares, how stock profits and losses are calculated, and basic terminology such as bid, ask, market orders, and limit orders.
Learn the basic language of options from the ground up.
You’ll learn what calls and puts are, the difference between the rights of an option buyer and the obligations of an option seller, why one standard option contract normally represents 100 shares, and what ITM, ATM, and OTM mean.
An options chain can look intimidating when you first see one.
We’ll teach you how to find and understand the information that matters—including the underlying price, expiration date, days to expiration, strike prices, bid, ask, and basic delta information.
You won’t just learn terminology.
You’ll practice navigating the tastytrade platform, finding a stock, opening an options chain, choosing an expiration, locating calls and puts, selecting strikes, identifying bid and ask prices, and building simulated orders.
You’ll practice the process repeatedly until you can work through it independently.
Once the foundation is established, we’ll introduce two ownership-based options strategies:
Cash-Secured Puts — Learn how selling a put can create an obligation to purchase 100 shares and why the decision should begin with whether you actually want to own the stock.
Covered Calls — Learn how an investor who owns 100 shares can sell a call to generate premium while accepting the obligation to sell those shares at the strike price.
You’ll also be introduced to how these two strategies can work together through The Wheel Strategy.
Start at the true beginning.
Learn the difference between a company, stock, exchange, index, and “the market.” Understand stock ownership, profit and loss, bid and ask prices, basic order types, diversification, and long-term investing concepts.
Now we add options.
Learn calls and puts, rights and obligations, the 100-share contract multiplier, premiums, strike prices, expiration dates, ITM/ATM/OTM, basic options-chain navigation, and options order terminology.
It’s time to put what you’ve learned onto the screen.
You’ll repeatedly practice finding stocks, navigating an options chain, choosing expirations and strikes, identifying calls and puts, reading bid/ask prices, constructing simulated orders, reviewing the order ticket, and canceling the order.
No real-money trades.
Bring everything together by learning two foundational ownership-linked options strategies.
You’ll learn how cash-secured puts and covered calls work, calculate basic risk and breakevens, understand assignment and expiration, and practice both strategies using simulated trades.
You’ll finish with a readiness assessment designed to determine whether you understand the concepts well enough to advance—not whether you’re ready to risk real money.
